Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival: Embrace Tradition and Joy!

Updated: Nov 18

As the harvest moon rises this September, we welcome the Mid-Autumn Festival,中秋节zhōng qiū jié, one of the most cherished celebrations in Chinese culture. This year, join us at YEAH CHINESE as we explore the vibrant traditions and cultural significance of this festive occasion.

A Time for Reunion and Reflection

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. This year, the festival falls on September 17th, marking a perfect moment for families and friends to come together.

Traditionally, the festival is a time for family reunions, reflecting on the year’s harvest, and appreciating the beauty of the moon. It symbolises unity, harmony, and the joy of sharing. The 8th lunar month in the northern hemisphere is the ripening season for crops and fruits. People would celebrate the harvest, express gratitude, and make wishes for a better life. Ancient Chinese believed that the moon on this particular night was the roundest and the brightest throughout the year.

Mooncakes: The Heart of the Celebration

No Mid-Autumn Festival is complete without mooncakes (月饼 yuè bǐng), a quintessential treat enjoyed during this season. These round pastries, often filled with sweet or savoury fillings, represent completeness and unity. Traditional fillings include lotus seed paste, red bean paste, and salted egg yolks, which represent the full moon and the festival’s emphasis on family reunion and harmony.

The round shape of mooncakes echoes the shape of the full moon, emphasising the festival’s theme of unity and togetherness. The salted egg yolk inside symbolises the moon itself, reinforcing the connection between the moon’s brightness and the idea of family gathering.

In addition to traditional flavours, modern mooncakes have introduced creative varieties such as matcha and chocolate. During the festival, families exchange mooncakes as a gesture of goodwill, wishing each other prosperity and happiness while celebrating their shared connections.

Lanterns and Festivities

Another highlight of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the lantern displays. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes illuminate the night sky, creating a magical atmosphere. Children and adults alike take part in lantern parades and competitions, showcasing their colourful and intricate creations.

In addition to lanterns, the festival is marked by cultural performances, including traditional music, dance, and poetry recitals. These events offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions of the Chinese people.

Legends and Stories

The Mid-Autumn Festival is filled with intriguing legends that add depth to the celebration. Here are two of the most popular:

  • The Legend of Chang’e

One of the most famous legends is about Chang’e, the Moon Goddess. According to the story, Chang’e drank a magical elixir of immortality to protect it from thieves. As a result, she ascended to the moon, where she now resides. Her story is now celebrated with moon gazing and storytelling during the festival.

  • The Legend of Wugang

Another beloved tale involves Guihua wine (Osmanthus wine) and Wugang, a blacksmith. Wugang was punished by the Jade Emperor to chop down a magical osmanthus tree on the moon, which was used to make divine Guihua wine. Despite his endless efforts, the tree remained unscathed. The tradition of drinking Guihua wine during the festival honors Wugang’s perseverance and connects the celebration to the moon.

These legends add a layer of cultural richness to the Mid-Autumn Festival, enhancing the experience of this joyful occasion.
