This collection of Match It! worksheets is highly recommended for teaching/learning Mandarin Chinese. Kids love cutting and matching up cards! These charming and entertaining worksheets can be utilized in varied ways, at different stages of teaching and learning, to enhance students’ language acquisition. Both Pinyin and Chinese characters are provided to support students.
Suggested ways of using this collection:
1. Matching
Use them to consolidate students’ knowledge of new vocabulary. Students need to cut out the cards, mix them up and then match them up. To save in-class time, the worksheets can be given to students prior to the lesson. Remind students to put their cut-out cards in a small sandwich bag with their name on it. The cards can then be stored in the classroom for future play.
2. Flip Flop
Make it even more fun with Flip Flop! Students can play individually or in pairs. Playing in pairs will certainly spice up the game. Students shuffle their 2 sets of cards and spread them face down on the table or floor. Each time they can flip over two cards. If the two cards match, the person needs to call out that word in Chinese. Then they can keep the cards and keep playing. If the cards do not match or the person cannot say that word successfully, they need to turn the cards back and it moves to the next player. When all the cards are matched, the game ends! The player with the most cards wins.
3. Assessment
Use them to evaluate students’ learning process in class as a formative or diagnostic assessment tool in order to make modifications as necessary. Students can play individually or in teams.
Assess Reading & Listening Skills
Teacher calls out words in Mandarin in random order. Students need to match up the correct cards together and place the cards according to the order the teacher calls out these words. For example, teacher calls out ‘眼睛’, ‘鼻子’, ‘嘴巴’, students need to find out these cards and have them matched in this order (eye, nose, mouth) from top to bottom on their table.
Students can play in pairs or in small groups. They can take turns to be the person calling out words, and the others have to match the cards up accordingly.
4. Extension Work
Print them out on an A4 paper (or even an A3 paper) and have them laminated. Cut the cards out and store them separately in small sandwich bags. Advanced students can be given this Match It! activity in class as extension work. Set a timer. Students have to shuffle the cards, spread them on the table and then match them up. See how fast they can go matching these cards up. Students can try three times. Their best record can be entered into a spread sheet so that they can see the top ones on the leader board. Kids love making new records! It works best for pairs. Have students trained and they will get better at this each time!
5. Homework
These worksheets can also be given to students as homework to help them revise and consolidate learned content.
6. Set Work
Provide them to casual/relief teachers as set work when you need cover. This will free you up and save you a great deal of valuable time. As all cards listed on the worksheets are correctly matched, the casual/relief teacher doesn’t need to know any Mandarin to mark students’ work or to guide students to mark each other’s work.
